Registration Volunteers

When: At-con, plus a pre-con training session

Registration needs volunteers to run the desk Registration greets all con attendees and has to be able to maintain a friendly, helpful attitude for each and every one. Registration information is maintained in a computer database, computer literacy and speed is required. Registration work is often high paced with few breaks or stopping points. Registration staff need to sign up for shifts ahead of time and are relied upon to arrive on time to work. If you have not worked Registration before, you must attend the training session on Thursday January 17th from 5:30-7pm at the Westin Waterfront or arrange for another training time before your scheduled shifts.
Backup Truck Drivers

When: Wednesday, Thursday, Monday, and/or Tuesday of the con

While we have two people to drive logistics trucks this year, the more the merrier (last year we had someone get sick at the last moment). If you are comfortable with driving a 24' truck around Boston and available Wednesday or Thursday pre-con or Monday or Tuesday after-con, please let us know (and include your experience) in case we need more people. If you want you could probably ride "shot-gun" this year to get more familiar with the routes we take and what the job entails and then take a more active role next year. No heavy lifting is required, but extra-credit for those who can also help load/unload the trucks.
Teen Lounge Attendant

We need attendants ages 15-19 to tend to the Teen Lounge. Duties include enforcing the age limit of members, picking up the room when necessary, calling the hotel when the trash needs tending to, and enforcing the rules of Teen Lounge.
Signshop Helpers

When: At con - mostly Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Signshop needs several people to help post signs and help set-up the sign kiosks which will be used for non-official flyers especially Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. While setting up the sign kiosks involves some heavy lifting, people of all abilities are needed. We'll find something for you do to that you are comfortable with. In addition Signshop could use one or two people familiar with InDesign or even Word to help make up last minute signs at con.
Quiet Room Attendant

When: At con.

We need someone to tend to the Quiet Room. Duties include picking up the room, and calling the hotel when the trash needs to be tended to, and enforcing the (basic) rules of the room.
Room Count Runner

When: At con.

We need folks to check in on the various Events at con, at the mid-point of the performances, to get a head count of the number of attendees. The volunteers must be on time, able to count, write down numbers, and the name of an Event item, and turn that in at the Programming office. We don't need more than one runner at any given point in time, but we need to have one on for all Event times - Friday (7PM to 1AM); Saturday (11AM to 1AM); Sunday (11AM to 1AM).
Program A/V Tech

When: Pre-con and at con.

Program AV is responsible for setting up AV equipment for Program Sessions. Mostly, this involves projection screens and video projectors, but it may also include DVD players, small sound systems, etc. The equipment must be locked down when in use and stored in a locked room because it is attractive to theft. The assistant manager works with the manager to do the following: 1) Pre-con Review the schedule and program AV requests to determine needs and feasibility. 2) Pre-con: Work with programming division to revise the schedule if there are too many simultaneous requests to be met. 3) Pre-con: Determine the schedule of who will deploy and strike which equipment, when, and where. 4) At con: Help with the setups and strikes as scheduled in step 3.
Blood Drive Helpers

Volunteer to recruit people for the blood drive, and help us get as many donors to the Blood Mobile as possible.
Film Room Assistants

When: At con.
Requires: Some shifts require 18+

Work in the Reel-to-Reel Film Room Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Some knowledge of film and sprocket winding would be useful, but mostly this is a seated position to offer security to the film projector and vault of films we'll have in the room. The Film Room schedule will be (most likely)/ Friday and Saturday nights we need 18+ person from 8pm, due to graphic content.
Video Room Tenders

When: At con. Late night and early morning shifts available.
Requires: Some shifts require 18+.

Arisia's Video Viewing Room needs volunteers who will take care that the shows are running properly (whether from VCR or DVD or Laptop) to the Video Projector. This also involves security for the room. The Video Viewing Room is open from Friday through Monday almost 24 hours per day. Skills needed include, being able to get the DVD player to quit blinking 1200, pushing Play buttons, pushing Open/Close Buttons, and sitting. Must be able to stand odd video from Japanese Anime to YouTube outtakes, and everything in between. 18+ required from 8pm to 6am because of adult content.
Fast Track Room Monitors

FastTrack is convention programming that specifically pays attention to the needs of our 6-12 year olds. This is a fun area with a number of stations ranging from quiet activities to ""active"" tracks. This is NOT babysitting. We need Room Monitors to assist in helping FastTrack programs to run smoothly. This may involve helping with a specific activity or help focusing kids into unstructured areas.
Babysitter (Guest of Honor Hospitality)

Two of the guests have a child. We would like to offer babysitting for any of the three evenings, if they would like it.
Guest of Honor Hospitality

When: At con.

Make certain that a given Guest of Honor has whatever is needful while s/he is doing things like book or art signing, attending panels, giving concerts or demos.
People working with Music GOH should know somethin about music and how to set up amplifiers etc. for their concerts. Those working with any of the GOHs need to be able to help them enjoy the convention and head off over-attentive fans. Tact required. Ability to think on one's feet required. Ability to text GOH Liaison for solving major problems required.
Access Info Wallpapering

Requires: Moderately physically active

This job entails putting up informational posters pertaining to access services around the convention, and taping "Parking spaces" for wheelchairs in all panel rooms.

Requires people  who can walk around the convention, and easily kneel on the floor for taping.
